Long Island is a complicated place. With more than 900 state, county, town, village and related municipal entities, it's easy to feel overwhelmed with information in the first few years of joining the local workforce. How does any young professional navigate the sprawling Island with its variety of employment opportunities and professional networks?
The bottom line is that the network of people you associate with and the spheres of influence you enter are critical to your personal and professional development. Most successful executives come to the revelation in their career that beyond who you know, the critical factor is who knows you — and how they view you. Unless you are known to the proverbial circle, you are not invited to “the table.” Some people view networking as “work” but it should be looked at as being intellectually curious and constantly learning from others. Each client, coworker, or professional in your field offers an opportunity to learn from their experiences, successes, and failures. Expand your community and you will get tenfold back.
USGBC-LI Emerging Professional Committee is a vibrant, community-based program that focuses on professionals who are new to the green building industry and the sustainability movement and are under the age of 35 years old. Under the USGBC community membership policy, chapters offer a single membership with discounts for full-time students and for full-time employees of USGBC national member companies. Please email dbusi@usgbc-li.org with any questions.
